Marilyn Tew – Development Director

A former assistant headteacher, and a skilled trainer and researcher, Marilyn was involved in Antidote’s Emotional Literacy Initiative as part of the research advisory body at the University of Bristol. Her role at Antidote involves training and consultancy work with schools, local authorities and other educational bodies on how they can use The PROGRESS Programme to develop strategies for shaping even better environments for learning. She is a co-author of Quality Circle Time: A Practitioner’s Handbook and Circles: PSHE and Citizenship . Her latest book is entitled School Effectiveness: Supporting student success through emotional literacy .

Allyson Goodchild – Primary Associate

Allyson has 15 years’ experience in teaching, culminating in 5 years as headteacher of a large primary school. Since 2005 she has worked as a visiting lecturer and link tutor at the University of Bedforshire, where her work includes designing and teaching modules on Education in Practice and Classroom Management for the BA in Educational Practice, supervising students on their dissertations, and tutoring BEd and PGCE students.

John Viner – Primary Associate

John trained in English and Drama and has taught in primary and secondary schools. He spent 28 years as a primary headteacher and has led five schools including a tiny village school, a large, successful junior school and a large primary school in extremely challenging circumstances. It was in this school that he worked with the Thanet Excellence Cluster in some leading edge developments in using emotionally literate practices both to support vulnerable pupils and in the context of school leadership.

John is now a full time consultant and writer working from Early Years to Post 16. He inspects for Ofsted and the Church of England, works in initial teacher education and provides a variety of bespoke support to a range of schools. He writes Primary Headship eBulletin for Optimus Education and his book, ‘Leading a Faith School’ was published by Optimus in 2009.

John Rees – Secondary Associate

Having taught for 12 years, eventually as a senior leader, John moved on to lead Devon’s Healthy Schools team and was responsible for transforming the APAUSE programme from a 2-school research project into an effective and sustainable, multi-agency programme annually involving 100,000 young people.

In 2006 John moved into freelance consultancy.  Recent commissions include: Regional Advisor for the National PSHE CPD programme, Regional Subject Advisor for the PSHE Association and training teachers, nurses, youth workers and others to develop their professional expertise to work with, and for, young people.  In the last five years, John has worked in Buckinghamshire, Bradford, Hull, Gloucestershire, Sheffield, Southend and Tower Hamlets. He has also worked in Russia, and more recently, China.

James Park – Director

James is Antidote’s founding director. He was working as a journalist and author when a conversation with psychotherapist Susie Orbach sparked the idea of the organisation as, initially, a campaign for emotional literacy. He has led Antidote through the various phases of its life: as a ginger group, a research organization and a social enterprise. His books include Sons, Mothers and Other Lovers ; Shrinks: The Analysts Analyzed and Learning to Dream: The New British Cinema , as well as the two volumes that have come out of Antidote’s work: The Emotional Literacy Handbook and The Emotional Literacy Pocketbook . He lives in London with his wife Ondine and daughter Tatyana. He has a passion for cycling, and took part with Antidote’s treasurer Henry in the 2010 étape – a stage of the Tour de France in the Pyrenées opened up to amateurs.
